Three top ways to keep cool without breaking the bank as temperatures soar

KEEPING cool does not have to come with a big price tag.

As temperatures soar, I have found some great ways to help you save cash, from cheap DIY hacks to easy tweaks you can make around the home to reduce your bills.

Here are some great ways to save cash, from cheap DIY hacks to easy tweaks that will help reduce your bills

SHOWER TIME: Install an energy efficient shower head to cut the amount of water you use without losing too much pressure.

Some water suppliers give these away for free.

Amazon has them from £10.49 and Screwfix from £30.

They don’t work with electric showers, though.

The Energy Saving Trust reckons the gadgets could save a family of four around £55 on their energy bills and £45 on water bills each year.

Keep your shower cool to lower your body temperature, ready for the day ahead.

Plus, cutting shower time by two minutes could save you £30 a year.

ROOM TEMPERATURE: Try to keep the blinds down and curtains drawn to block out sun.

Avoid opening the windows in the hottest part of the day.

Instead, in the early morning or after sundown, open windows on either side of your home as well as the doors in between them to create a through draught.

You can even try wetting tin foil to stick it to your window panes to reflect the heat back out and keep the room cool.

COOL MEALS: Keep to cold food for lunch and dinner, as you won’t want to put the oven on.

A salad nicoise is easy to make and perfect in this weather.

Throw together some salad leaves with a tin of tuna, hard boiled eggs, black olives, tomatoes, cucumber, boiled new potatoes and anchovies if you like them.

Asda has a recipe here.

Or put together a cold spread by buying ready-roasted chicken, coleslaw, dips and tasty bites.

Asda has a two-for-£4 deal on selected cooked meats and three-for-£5 on a choice of pasta, couscous and grain salads.

Food will spoil more quickly in the heat and anything you leave out is likely to attract bugs.

Pop it in the fridge or freezer to avoid waste.
