Six tips to fill up your freezer for less this summer

YOU don’t need a heatwave to make the most of your cold storage.

With the summer holidays on the horizon, your freezer really comes into its own. Fill up for less with these cool tips.

With the summer holidays on the horizon, your freezer really comes into its own

GOOD TO GO: Having dishes on standby avoids expensive, last-minute supermarket trips and pricey takeaways.

Double up on pasta dishes, sauces, curries and casseroles and freeze half for use another time.

For summer, if you’re having a barbecue, make an extra batch of burgers and store them ready for the next time you fire up the grill.

Check out the easy homemade beef burger recipe at realfood.tesco.com.

MORE BREAD, LESS DOUGH: Bread is one of our most wasted foods, with 24million slices hitting the bin each day.

Instead of letting it go off, keep a loaf of slices and a bag of wraps in the freezer, ready to take out for sandwiches and picnics when needed.

JUICY SAVINGS: Muffins, smoothies and ice lollies are all at your fingertips if you keep a bag of berries in the freezer.

Morrisons Wonky Berry Mix, £2.75 for a kilo, is a freezer essential for whipping up summer desserts and cooking fruit treats.

Check out the recipe at sainsburys.co.uk for berry ice lollies.

NO-FUSS FAVES: Pick up bargains on ready-made faves when you see them.

Bird’s Eye 22 Chicken Dippers are £2.50, down from £3 at Sainsbury’s, although the store’s own Battered Chicken Dippers are better value at £3.75 for 44.

HOOK A GREAT DEAL: Fish can be good value from the frozen aisle and can be transformed into fish pie, fish cakes or home-made breaded fish.

Sainsbury’s had great value J James white fish fillets, 520g, £2.35 (£4.52 per kg) compared with its cheapest fresh Basa fillets, which are twice as much at £9 per kg.

BAKE SOME SAVINGS: Keep a batch of flapjacks or brownies in the freezer, frozen individually after being cooked and cut. They’ll make ready-to-go treats for picnics and days out.
