NEW shoes can be a big expense for hard-pressed parents as kids head back to school next month.
But you don’t need to be well-heeled to find great footwear.
Follow our tips to make school shoes last longer
Here are some of the best current deals, along with tips for making shoes last longer.
STARTER FOR TEN: Use the code schoolshoes10 at Sportsdirect.com to get ten per cent off. Prices start from £4.99, but you could use the code to find some more durable leather shoes like the Kangol Castor lace shoes for boys, from £12. You will have to pay £4.99 delivery or collect in-store.
GET MORE WEAR: For shoes that last longer, choose those with toe guards and buffers, and look for soles which are stitched as well as glued on. Some patent shoes will stay looking smarter for longer.
JOIN THE CLUB: At Shoezone, where prices start at £7.99 for school shoes and £9.99 for trainers, you can get £5 off if you join the Shoezone club and spend more than £20. Standard delivery is free.
PAIR OF PAIRS: If you have more than one child to kit out, you can pick up a pair of school shoes at Deichmann.com and get a second pair half-price. Prices start from £14.99 and the store stocks brands including Clarks, Fila and Start-Rite. Delivery starts from £1.99 and is free over £35 or for click and collect.
ON YOUR MARKS: For trainers, football boots and sportier school shoes, you can use the code “school” at Adidas.com to get 30 per cent off full-price items and 20 per cent off some already reduced items. You’ll pay £3.99 for delivery or collect in-store for free.
WET WEATHER WARNING: You may be tempted to dry children’s rain-soaked shoes on a radiator, but this can shrink and shrivel the material. Instead, crumple sheets of newspaper into balls and fill the insides so that the paper soaks up any water.
SMELLS LIKE TEEN TRAINERS: If shoes start to get stinky, cover the insole with bicarbonate of soda and leave overnight before tipping out in the morning.
