SUMMER holidays are around the corner but with the cost of living rising, can you host a family party without breaking the bank?
We’ve tested some summer favourite products to find out which supermarket own-brand goods are the best quality for the price.
We tasted supermarket own-brand coleslaw
We bought regular own-brand coleslaw from Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Aldi and Lidl.
We scored it out of ten for taste, taking into account how healthy it was.
And we also rated the coleslaw out of ten for value, based on the price you pay per 100g.
Here’s how the coleslaws scored out of 20 overall:

Asda’s coleslaw is our favourite
WINNER: Asda Coleslaw
The Asda coleslaw was really creamy and full of crunchy veg.
At 27p per 100g, it was one of the cheapest coleslaws we tested – and we loved that it came in a resealable pack so you could save any
leftovers for the next day.
Taste: 8/10
Value: 8/10
Total: 16/20

Aldi’s was good value, but the texture could’ve been better
Aldi The Deli Coleslaw
Aldi’s coleslaw came in a huge 600g tub, which meant it cost just 15p per 100g.
But the lid wasn’t resealable, which meant it wasn’t easy to save any leftovers. It had a pleasant creamy taste but was a little thin and watery.
It also contained lots of veg but the size of the pieces was very uneven.
Taste: 6/10
Value: 8/10
Total: 14/20

If you like onions, you might like this one
Morrisons Coleslaw
This coleslaw from Morrisons was creamy and crunchy, but with perhaps a little too much onion in it.
It was in the middle price-wise, at 38p per 100g.
Taste: 7/10
Value: 6/10
Total: 13/20

Tesco’s is the second most expensive and it’s not the tastiest
Tesco Coleslaw
Tesco’s coleslaw was fairly thin and watery, with a sharp vinegary taste. It was packed with veg but some of it was a bit soft instead of really crunchy.
At 39p per 100g, this was also the second most-expensive coleslaw we tried.
Taste: 6/10
Value: 5/10
Total: 11/20

The quality doesn’t match the price with this one
Sainsbury’s Deli Style Coleslaw
The Sainsbury’s coleslaw had an unpleasantly bitter taste. It contained large chunks of cabbage and onion but was lacking in carrot.
Considering this was the most expensive own-brand coleslaw we tried – at 42p per 100g – we were disappointed with the quality.
Taste: 5/10
Value: 4/10
Total: 9/20

Lidl’s version wasn’t our favourite
Lidl Meadow Fresh Coleslaw
Lidl’s coleslaw also came in a 600g tub. It had a resealable lid but the coleslaw was so watery that it leaked before we’d even got it home from the supermarket, which was frustrating.
The coleslaw contained unpleasantly large chunks of veg in a very thin, tasteless but oddly sweet liquid.
We weren’t impressed with this one, despite it being joint cheapest at 15p per 100g.
Taste: 2/10
Value: 7/10
Total: 9/20
If you’re looking for more barbecue bargains, we tested supermarket burgers to find the tastiest.
And we tried all the own-brand sausages to find the best banger for your buck.
