TESCO has cut 325 jobs as part of a major shake-up as it plans to recruit thousands of temporary workers over Christmas.
It comes as the supermarket announced plans to recruit 12,500 temporary workers to keep up with demand over Christmas.
The retailer said that the job cuts don’t affect store staff
Tesco said that the job cuts affect their office and field-based teams and not those that work in its stores.
A Tesco spokesperson said: “Last month we announced some changes to a small number of roles in our office and regional teams, to ensure our business is as simple and efficient as possible, and so we can continue to invest for our customers.
“This means a reduction of around 325 roles. We currently have over 500 vacancies in our office and will work with colleagues to find alternative roles wherever possible.”
The job cuts come only months after the supermarket cut 1,400 jobs back in February.
The supermarket moved its overnight stock replenishment into the daytime at 85 stores, which led to substantial job losses.
Other retailers have also cut jobs this year after citing inflationary pressure and tough trading conditions.
Co-Op slashed 400 jobs in its company head office in July. A move which affected back office staff in areas like finance, marketing and IT are affected.
Primark also started the year with a staffing shake-up that cut 400 jobs.
But Tesco has also confirmed a massive winter recruitment drive, which will see the supermarket hire thousands of temporary workers for the busy Christmas period.
The details of this newly announced recruitment drive remain unclear.
The supermarket also announced a bumper pay rise for thousands of its staff this morning.
This is the second time that Tesco staff will receive a pay rise to help with the cost of living this year.
From November 13, the basic hourly rate of pay in Tesco stores will increase by a further 20p to £10.30, and to £10.98 in London.
Tesco will also be doubling its staff Clubcard discount to 20% during the key Christmas shopping period from December 13-19.
The supermarket has also agreed to bring forward its next meeting with the shopworker’s union Usdaw in January for the next round of pay negotiations.
