It is important to understand personal finance but secondary education offers very little opportunity for students to do so. A few schools offer vocational education in personal finance, but these are rare. In general, young adults are expected to learn about money management on their own. Consequently, the lack of personal finance instruction in school curricula means that other factors are likely to play a greater role in shaping their knowledge.
There is a lot of research available on the subject, but very few studies have looked at the extent that personal finance is taught in schools. This is especially true in Germany which does not have personal finance as a part of its secondary education curriculum.

The most important financial product for young German adults is their own bank account. Credit cards are not used widely in the country. However, credit cards are increasingly popular in Germany. This does not mean that the number of financial products is increasing. This study investigates how exposure to financial products influences knowledge of personal finances, which is especially important for a generation that relies on personal credit.
Using a sample of young adults ages seventeen to twenty-five, the study tested the association between knowledge of personal finance and information behavior related to personal finance. Data were analyzed with regression models. There were clear correlations between knowledge and understanding of the banking sub-dimension. These results are consistent and in line with literature on personal finance.
Knowledge of personal financial matters was positively associated with income, employment, and time since defaulting. Although there is some overlap between the size of one's income and the number of employees, the effect is statistically insignificant. Likewise, the number of years since defaulting on lone debt is relatively small. However, it is not true that young adults are ignorant of personal finance. Many of them have a keen interest on personal finance-related topics. This is a standardized financial literacy test based upon the National Standards for Financial Literacy. There are 45 items in the test, as well as a stem and a situation outline.
Although personal finance is not covered in German school curriculums, the study found that other factors play an even greater role in financial literacy than the contents of a textbook. Young adults with a financial education or who have had vocational training tend to be better informed about personal finance than their peers.

Also, the results of this study show that personal financial knowledge is closely linked to the amount of money one can borrow. It is beneficial to have a lot of money, but it can also be harmful to have a small amount. Exposition to financial loss can also affect a firm’s survival rate. As a result, owners of small businesses may reduce the number of employees following a loss of personal wealth.

What is the difference between passive income and active income?
Passive income is when you make money without having to do any work. Active income requires hardwork and effort.
If you are able to create value for somebody else, then that's called active income. It is when someone buys a product or service you have created. Examples include creating a website, selling products online and writing an ebook.
Passive income is great because you can focus on other important things while still earning money. Most people don't want to work for themselves. So they choose to invest time and energy into earning passive income.
The problem with passive income is that it doesn't last forever. If you wait too long before you start to earn passive income, it's possible that you will run out.
Also, you could burn out if passive income is not generated in a timely manner. It is best to get started right away. If you wait to start earning passive income, you might miss out opportunities to maximize the potential of your earnings.
There are three types of passive income streams:
-
Businesses - these include owning a franchise, starting a blog, becoming a freelancer, and renting out the property such as real estate
-
These include stocks and bonds and mutual funds. ETFs are also investments.
-
Real Estate - These include buying land, flipping houses and investing in real estate.
How much debt are you allowed to take on?
It is essential to remember that money is not unlimited. Spending more than you earn will eventually lead to cash shortages. Savings take time to grow. Spend less if you're running low on cash.
But how much is too much? Although there's no exact number that will work for everyone, it is a good rule to aim to live within 10%. You won't run out of money even after years spent saving.
If you earn $10,000 per year, this means you should not spend more than $1,000 per month. If you make $20,000 per year, you shouldn't spend more then $2,000 each month. If you earn $50,000, you should not spend more than $5,000 per calendar month.
The key here is to pay off debts as quickly as possible. This includes student loans, credit cards, car payments, and student loans. When these are paid off you'll have money left to save.
It would be best if you also considered whether or not you want to invest any of your surplus income. You could lose your money if you invest in stocks or bonds. But if you choose to put it into a savings account, you can expect interest to compound over time.
As an example, suppose you save $100 each week. In five years, this would add up to $500. You'd have $1,000 saved by the end of six year. You'd have almost $3,000 in savings by the end of eight years. By the time you reach ten years, you'd have nearly $13,000 in savings.
At the end of 15 years, you'll have nearly $40,000 in savings. Now that's quite impressive. But if you had put the same amount into the stock market over the same time period, you would have earned interest. Instead of $40,000, you'd now have more than $57,000.
You need to be able to manage your finances well. You might end up with more money than you expected.
