Five tips to reduce waste by making the most of your bathroom products

MAKING full use of household items has never been more important with our finances under so much pressure.

It’s Zero Waste Week, which is the perfect time to look at how you can reduce the amount you chuck away.

On Monday we showed how to avoid throwing out food, with hacks to improve the shelf life of groceries.

Today, we have a nose in your bathroom cabinet to spot areas where you may be throwing money down the drain.

CLEAR CLUTTER: Sometimes we end up buying bottles we don’t need because cupboards are so cluttered that we’re not even sure what’s in there. Go through your stash and use up any products before buying new items.

PUFFED OUT: Save on the amount of shower gel you use with a puff. You’ll only need about a teaspoon to get it lovely and bubbly, plus it will keep your skin nicely exfoliated.

GO BIG OR GO HOME: Choose a shower gel fragrance all the family like and get one large bottle with a pump. Find a shampoo and conditioner that work for everyone and do the same.

If you’re all using smaller bottles there’s more waste as more liquid is left behind in each one.

DO THE DOUBLE: Lots of products can have multiple uses. Rather than buying shaving cream for your legs, you can use hair conditioner which will help the razor to glide and leave your pins silky smooth. Plus it’s one less bottle under the sink.

Finish the dregs at the end of bath gel and shampoo by diluting with water so the kids can use it as a bubble-blowing solution.

Old toothbrushes are great for scrubbing grout and other cleaning jobs.

FEELING THE SQUEEZE: Get an extra week’s use out of your toothpaste with a little metal gadget that helps you to get the last bit out of the tube.

Sainsbury’s is selling the UpCircle tube squeezer for £1.50, down from £2.50, but you could also use a bulldog clip on the end of the roll.
